Socrates is most famously associated with hemlock; found guilty of corrupting the minds of Athens’ youth, his punishment was to drink from a poisoned cup. The elegant dark design shows a repeat golden ‘cup of hemlock’ motif. Used with deadly effect, hemlock appears in just one of Agatha Christie’s novels – one of my favourites.
